If you’re taking your mother out for a good ole’ fashioned Mother’s Day brunch, you may have to hold that umbrella for her as today will be a soggy one for some parts of the country, while others can take advantage of more peaceful weather to celebrate all the moms out there.
The main story for today will be a developing storm system over the central and southern Plains, which will bring widespread scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the day to these regions, as well as western portions of the Lower Mississippi Valley. The best chance for rain will come in the afternoon for most areas, but morning storms will also be a burden for some, particularly across parts of the southern Plains.
Scattered showers will also spread back into the central Rockies, with snow possible at higher elevations. Across the northern Plains, a cold front from a separate storm system will swoop down from Canada throughout the day, creating the chance for an isolated shower or thunderstorm during the afternoon.
That same storm system will be traversing across the Upper Midwest throughout the day, bringing with it the chance for scattered storms across northern portions of the Great Lakes.
Mom will also need an umbrella across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, where a pesky disturbance hovering over upstate New York will keep rain showers in the forecast for most of the day.
The rest of the country, including all those living west of the Rockies, residents of the Southeast and denizens Ohio Valley, will enjoy dry weather to round off the weekend as high pressure settles in.
Temperatures today will bear a strong resemblance to Saturday. While 50s and 60s will be the extent of things in the Northeast, widespread 70s to lower 80s will be found from the Dakotas and Minnesota to the Southeast. Higher elevations of the West will see highs in the 70s, while 80s and 90s will be found from the interior Northwest to the Desert Southwest, south Texas and Florida.
